Animal Dedication Poems
by Alison Stormwolf

Animals have been one of my greatest passions. They have taught me so much about living unconditionally and humbled me again and again with their purity and giving natures. I have been very blessed to have had them in my life, sometimes as pets at other times as teachers in the wild.

These are some poems from a collection about a few of the animals who have shared their love and opened me to ever deepening connection to them.

My Tiger

Less than five feet away
From where my loved one sits
Cars and tractors drive bye
Sometimes, at great speed.

Oblivious to the fact
That the small bundle of fur
That inconspicuous
Little creature in the bushes
With the red tartan collar
And the St. Christopher plaque
Carries my heart’s treasure...

Means more to me
Than a cat ever ought to do
But he is a ‘tiger’ inside
And so
He must be allowed
His freedom

His life,
Long or short
MUST be lived in open spaces

And so
He sits and he stalks,
Five feet from the road.
And I watch
And I pray

To Love A Rat

He will not be contained
Though encased within a tiny frame
his heart is expansive
Though his body is failing
his spirit is stronger than ever

I will not force his return
to his metal prison
If he desires my company
he shall have it
I have been elevated
my heart has been pierced

As he lies in my arms
I know his days are numbered
he has gifted me with his presence
I am humbly indebted to him
for all he has taught me
Whoever would have thought
such love I have
for my rat?

For my rat Capin

Capin Crosses the Rainbow Bridge

Capin is dead
And though his leaving
tears a hole in my heart
so too, did his living
For all the laboritory rats
subjected to useless agonising
cruel experiments

Don't tell me that its worth it!
A rat is not a human
Their physiology makes their suffering
an abomination
Thalidomide was proven safe in rats!

Capin is dead
and his living was not in vain
He taught me to go forward in love
and those you approach
will get to love you too

He taught me that our enemies
(for him cats)
are not hostile if we approach them in love
He taught me that we can be lowly
but we can leave our mark in a big way

He showed me the meaning of "courage"

In 53 years I have never seen such bravery
David and Goliath?
Capin and Pushka!
Sleep well my little educator
You died on the carpet
outside your cage
Free..............
as you always were
In your
amazing
heart.

For the Furred and Feathered

Driving home this morning
A saw a fox taken in seconds
Under the wheels of the car in front
I did not witness any swerving
Maybe the 'wily one'
Made his bid for the other side in seconds?
I don’t think so
I only saw bright red, splattered blood
and still legs,

Then a pheasant
In full plumage,
Sacrificed in seconds to those
Who want to get to work on time?
Oh I know I cannot always blame
The driver
I have seen a bird
Swoop down under my wheels
And my heart was speared
For the innocents

I do not want to know, be told
It happens every second
I cannot take the cruelty and suffering
While knowing all the time it exists
A greyhound was “rescued” by police
Taken into police kennels
Then left to die a slow trusting death

Human incompetence
Forgot to register
That sole inmate
Of his 'rescue centre'
So for many days (15) before found
I see that dog's face..........
Waiting, waiting

Was I to dwell on these things?
I would go quite mad.
But I want to howl for my relations
Who wear fur or feathers
Denied the gift of language
Their suffering is extreme.
and always
SILENT.

Maverick

Yes!
YOU are the warrior

18 inches of total rebellion
wrapped inside
your jet black skin.

A daily struggle
Just to keep you safe
Save you
From yourself

Unlikeable
You become a panther
At feeding times
That wildness
HAS to come out

Why do I look
Into your yellow eyes
And see myself

Looking back?

Fang

The gentle one
With the worried expression

Oh, you are a farm cat
This time round

In another life
You slept on angora
How hard to
Acclimatise yourself

Sleep deep
Little black one
For you are loved
And adored
Just as you are.

Your name betrays you
But I see the real you
Such magesty
Such gentleness
So honoured
Am I.

For Chief

You come to me in sacred times
In misty wakenings and in dreams.
My love for you, and your devotion
Crosses the barrier which divides us,
Comforts me in times of desolation.
Oh, The richness of a heartfelt love!
Transcends the boundaries between
Life and death, human and animal!

Our earthly minds cannot grasp
The exquisite bond between
A dog and his master or mistress
Unspoken, deep, unfathomable.

In life the communication
To a large degree telepathic
And so, also, I believe, in death…
For still I see you
I long to feel your thick fur
As my arms hug your strong body
The weight of your sturdy legs
As you reach up to lick my face
Your face at the window on my return
Your honest eyes, your tender heart
Gone for now but not forever
My much loved friend,

Cherished companion,
Animal soul-mate.
Wait for me.

About This Poem:
My German Shepherd "Chief" was with me for 13 years. Taken out from his litter mates at weeks old, he was my faithful friend through the birth of my three children.

In old age our need to talk became redundant. We communicated telepathically.

He was put to sleep in my arms by the vet when nothing more could be done aged 13. I cried more for him than when I lost my own father. How honoured I was to be his guardian in this life. He left a hole in my heart which will never be filled. I have seen him in dreams and I know I will see him again.

The Voice Of The Animals
(The Animal Healer)

She takes them in her arms
And their fears are assuaged
They, the young, the helpless
Know at soul level, she IS love

She cannot see her beauty
Though to me I almost have
To shield my eyes before her
So full of love is she

My heart breaks for her disappointments
When we love
We want to protect
How hard it is to see or know
Of another’s branding with the
Master’s branding iron….
That ‘call’ to service

And so I have to stand back
And know she suffers.
The silent witness to her pain
That pain of birth
From one reality to the other
That divine calling out of the herd
To be marked……
That singling out
She cannot avoid…
For that is her soul’s purpose;

She thinks she is unworthy
has nothing to offer but good intent
Oh, that I could show her
What the end results of ‘good intent’
Will be for this amazing soul

For she talks to the animals,
And those with no voice
will flock to her safe keeping,
For they see the heart of love
That beats in that precious soul of hers.

God grant that I will witness
The fruits of what my spirit sees
For the four legged's have no way
Of saying what they suffer
Save through the likes of her
And the likes of her
Are rare, special, gifted and overflowing
With an Earth mission she will fulfil

She talks to the animals
They know at once they are safe
She will heal and bring great comfort
She will be the bridge between
Them and us
They will speak through her

The world is a better place
Because my dear friend is in it
The animal kingdom rejoices……….
And so do I.

For Pushka

Small and grey
No distinguishing features
Bought from a dog and cat home
One charmed day 18 months ago
I took home my tiny treasure

Never a 'cat person'
I had to settle, tone down my desires
For a replacement for my 'Chief'
Beloved departed German Shepherd
My lack of money
And flat in town
Limited my choices

And so...
He came into my life
And my heart….
And my soul

Oh yes,
In no way was I prepared
To experience his presence
I had a cat before
Along with every other small
And large animal
Dogs, horses………..

I had thought
With huge sadness
My special telepathic
Understanding with Chief
Long since crossed
The rainbow bridge
Would never be replaced...
Certainly not,
By a mere cat!

Oh how wrong was I!
For my friend is there
Beside me every night
I would chew off my own foot
To save him
If that was ever required
Those with vision beyond the norm
Have seen me with a tiger
Yes, a tiger!

My small grey blessing
My much loved friend and brother
Whose green eyes speak to me
And mine to him
Who brings me so much happiness
And love beyond expectation
Has been a special gift.

Thank you
My small friend
For your presense
Thank you
For your gift to me
Thank you
For sharing my life
In the sure and certain knowledge
That love and blessings
Are not to ever be judged
By the vessel.

My much loved Pushka.
